One of many things coming out of SDCC this time around is the new Dungeons and Dragons movie trailer. The D&D movie has been talked about as far back as 2013, but it was one of those things that we have all been a bit skeptical about. After the movie that was released in 2000, and the straight to home media follow ups, D&D fans have rightfully had questions about the future of the franchise.
This new movie directed and co-wrote by John Francis Daley (Who I remember as Jim in Kitchen Confidential) and Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night, Spider-Man: Homecoming) with additional writing and story by Michael Gilio (Kwik Stop) and Chris McKay (Robot Chicken, The Lego Batman Movie). The movie is headlined by a star studded cast which includes Chris Pine (Star Trek), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast Franchise), and Hugh Grant (Bridget Jones). It does have some newer, but quickly rising stars as well in Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Justice Smith (Jurassic World), and Sophia Lillis (It).
First impressions is this looks pretty good, but until you see the full movie you never know. While the plot is still a bit unknown, it does look like they are tapping into the misadventures that players run into such as stealing an item for a price only to find out that you stole an item for a pretty evil person and now have to stop that person sorta game. Pretty normal day in D&D land, right? Of course the normal criticism is popping up online, but so far the reaction has been pretty positive (Though, as a Druid in my current game, I wish we could turn into Owlbears!).
The movie is set to hit theaters on March 3rd 2023 stateside. What do you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below!
