I can’t say much about GitM, as I never had much interest in the original manga (or any of the anime adaptations for that matter). I can say that I have heard enough about it in the past to know that the newest adaptation might be taking a bit of a turn from its original source material.
In the movie Scarlett Johansson plays the lead role of Major Motoko Kusangi. However, the choice of Johansson has been a controversial one. Director Rupert Sanders defended the choice of Johansson during an event in Tokyo last year, but it did very little to quiet the criticism of “whitewashing”.
Personally, this is starting to remind me a lot of the movie adaptations of Avatar and Dragon Ball. Those movies failed on many levels thanks to bad casting and terrible scripts, but neither had the draw of high grossing actor such as Johansson and you can bet that Paramount and Dreamworks are undoubtedly aware of that.
