Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania reviews starting off rocky

Critics opinions are starting to roll in and they aren’t holding back. However, how will the movie fair with the general public?

There is no doubt that Marvel Studios was looking to start their 2023 off with a bang. Quantumania is set to introduce the next big MCU threat in Kang the Conqueror, a dangerous and mysterious threat who hails from the 31st century. As of this writing we don’t really know too much about the MCU Kang and how different he is from his original comic counterpart, outside of what we learned in “Loki” and through commercials.

Needless to say, there is alot riding on the shoulders of Quantumania to help usher in the era of this new MCU menace, which is what makes some of the reviews that started rolling in this week…Concerning.

“But as I sat there watching Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, I started to wonder if perhaps, back when we as nerdy little kids wished for it, all those long years ago, someone snuck a monkey’s paw into the whole affair. How else to explain how tirelessly, how doggedly, the film kept insisting that nothing I was witnessing remotely mattered — not simply to the cacophonous macrocluster of corporate content called the MCU, but to…much of anything, really?”

Glen Weldon – NPR

“Quantumania is somehow heavy without feeling substantial, almost desperate in its dourness. Even scattered with occasional wisecracks, it makes Eternals feel positively breezy by comparison.”

David Fear – Rollingstone

While these seem a bit harsh they are just a few examples of what is being said on sites like Rotten Tomatoes where Quantumania is currently sitting at around 51%. However, not all critics are in a agreement with some more nerd centric names like Nerdist and Movie Bob giving the movie a passing grade (barely). Matthew Huff over at AV Club had the following to say…

“Quantumania’s tone is sure to be polarizing, but if you can surrender yourself to its bonkers A Bug’s Life-meets-Return of the Jedi antics, the two hours (already short for a Marvel film) will fly by.”

David Huff – AV Club

In the end though, the box office numbers will of course tell the real story and will be what Marvel Studios and Disney will be keeping a close eye on. It seems like most people do not get as swayed by critics as they do other consumer reviews, hence why you didn’t buy that microwave on Amazon with the 4 stars versus the one with 4.5 stars.

Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania is in theaters starting today.
